Interested in working on a real world problem with a team of dedicated SMU students? Want to design and build something innovative and new? Excited to leverage the skills you already have and build new ones along the way? Got a passion for the Maker Movement and Maker Education?

We have adopted the SparkTruck, a nationally-recognized maker education project and mobile makerspace, and have brought it to Dallas. Check out the story here. We need your help redesigning and rebuilding the inside of the truck and putting a unique Lyle/SMU spin on this project to make it our own. The MakerTruck will be used for outreach with kids and professional development of educators.

The Deason Innovation Gym (we call it the DIG) is hosting our second Immersive Design Challenge (IDC) of the year this May 22nd-26th. Join us as we redesign the inside of Lyle's brand new MakerTruck! We are currently taking applications. This IDC will be the kick-off to the launch of the Maker Education Project, a new initiative at Lyle. This experience is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Project Scope:

The design team will conduct research related to the needs, constraints and opportunities for a mobile makerspace. The student team will then design plans, including technical drawings and schematics and build out the inside and the outside of the truck. Challenges to tackle include: ventilation, workflow, storage, branding, driver comfort and, how best to leverage the truck for educational purposes. Students will also have the opportunity to design maker-based workshops and curriculum.

All deliverables from the SMU team will be completed by Friday, May 26th, 2017 with optional additional build days the following week.

Project Deliverables:

  • Technical drawings and schematics

  • Build out of the MakerTruck, both internal and external

  • Design research synthesis

  • Curriculum/workshop development for the program

  • Additional recommendations

Participation:

We are seeking 12-15 SMU students, drawing from the Lyle School, the Simmons School, the Cox School and beyond, to participate in this project. In order to participate, you must commit to 5 full works days (May 22nd-26th) of intense focus on this project.

We are looking for students with a variety of backgrounds and expertise. Previous experience at the DIG is not required.

Three meals a day will be provided. Orientation, access and trainings on necessary tools will be provided by DIG staff. On campus housing may be available during this time.

Applications are currently open. Please click here to apply. Applications close at midnight on Friday, May 5th. You will be notified of your status on Tuesday, May 9th.
