Pokémon Go hit over 100 million downloads in less than a month; every day, 28 million people harvest their crops on FarmVille. As a planet, people spend 3 billion hours a week playing video and computer games. Given these statistics, it is clear the game industry has figured how to drive human behavior and turn motivation and incentive systems into a science. So, what elements and techniques can higher education learn from the gaming industry in order to drive student engagement and retention?

Part of the Division of Student Affairs Spring Brownbag Series. The Division of Student Affairs encourages staff at all levels to pursue research and develop best practices for the field. Many of our professionals and graduate assistants presented at local, regional, and national conferences over the last academic year. We invite the campus community to share in those experiences and have asked the presenters to replicate their presentations on our campus for a brownbag series. All SMU students, staff, and faculty are welcome to attend however seating is limited in the Health Center Classroom (enter from the north entrance).
